iii) The yoga of unity: the synonyms

19. Free of mental engagement; this is mahāmudrā.

Free of extremes; this is mahāmadhyamaka.

All-inclusive, it is also called mahāsandhi.

May I gain confidence that knowing one is realizing all.

Once you have realized innate timeless awareness just as it is, the unified yoga of resting in that equipoise is free of all mental engagement. This is called mahāmudrā (“great seal”). Other synonyms are enumerated. Because it is free of all extremes of embellishment, the mahāmadhyamaka (“great middle way”) is also this very thing. In this is included the realization of all phenomena, so it is also called mahāsandhi (“great completion”). Through knowing this one thing, we aspire to gain the confidence of realizing all the secret vital points of the meaning of all phenomena.

The word “also” indicates that all characteristics and meanings of the vast and profound Dharma are included in this. Therefore this also establishes that “knowing one liberates all.” Having pondered this, Sugata Pakmo Drupa stated:

All concepts and afflictions are tamed,

so this is the Vinaya.

It is the source of the certain knowledge

that all conceptual thoughts are dharmakāya.

As all embellishment is severed from within,

this is the instruction of the guru.

[Eternalism, nihilism, impositions, denials;

free of all such extremes, it is the middle way.

Being unutterable, unthinkable, and inexpressible,
